Most small businesses treat "showing up in AI search" as one goal. New research says it is actually two separate goals — and doing well at one tells you almost nothing about the other.
Ahrefs analyzed 730,000 response pairs from Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode answering the same queries. The two systems reached a semantically similar conclusion 86% of the time — but cited the same URL only 13.7% of the time (rising to 16.3% when comparing just the top three citations from each). Put plainly: AI Overviews and AI Mode usually agree on the answer while almost completely disagreeing on where they found it. (Reported by Search Engine Journal.)
A separate SE Ranking study found a similar gap from another angle: average URL overlap between AI Mode and AI Overviews of just 10.7%, with domain-level overlap at 16%. SE Ranking also compared AI Mode against classic top-10 organic rankings for the same queries — only 14% URL overlap, 21.9% at the domain level. Ranking #1 on Google does not reliably get you cited in AI Mode either.
Why the Two Systems Choose Different Sources
AI Overviews sits directly inside regular search results and leans on a fast synthesis of the same signals that drive classic organic ranking. AI Mode is a separate, conversational retrieval system that does deeper multi-step research and produces answers Ahrefs found to be roughly 4x longer on average. That extra depth changes which sources get pulled in: Ahrefs found Wikipedia cited in 28.9% of AI Mode answers versus 18.1% in AI Overviews, and AI Mode cited Quora roughly 3.5x more often. AI Mode is also rolling out directly into the Chrome address bar in the US this year, following earlier rollouts in the UK — meaning more of your customers' everyday searches will run through this second, differently-sourced system without them ever typing "AI Mode." What This Means If You're Only Optimizing for One
If your GEO checklist stops at "we got cited in an AI Overview once," you have verified visibility in roughly one of two systems your customers actually use — and the data above says that citation gives you very little confidence about the other. A business that nails a concise, snippet-ready answer for AI Overviews may still be invisible in the longer, more research-driven answers AI Mode generates, and vice versa. For a bilingual agency's clients, this doubles the usual GEO problem: most competitors have optimized for neither system in English, and almost none have in Chinese.
Five Actions to Cover Both Surfaces
- Test both surfaces separately, by hand. Search your top 5–10 "money" queries once in regular Google (checking the AI Overview) and once in AI Mode (via google.com/ai or the Chrome address bar prompt). Note which URL, if any, gets cited in each. This ten-minute audit is the only way to see your real overlap — or gap.
- Write for both lengths. Keep a tight, directly-answerable paragraph near the top of a page for AI Overviews' fast synthesis, and back it with a genuinely deep, multi-section guide underneath for AI Mode's longer-form retrieval.
- Build presence beyond your own domain. Since AI Mode leans harder on third-party sources like Wikipedia, Quora, and community/review sites, a Clutch profile, an active Yelp/Bing Places listing, or a well-answered Quora thread does double duty as a citation source neither system can find on your homepage alone.
- Check Search Console's Generative AI report by surface. The report Google launched in June 2026 already breaks out AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover separately — use it to see whether you're actually appearing in both, not just one.
- Don't declare victory after one citation. One AI Overview mention is a data point, not proof of GEO success. Track citations across both surfaces over time before concluding a page "works" for AI search.
